Lady Dawgs Win Second Straight
Keeli Burton Oliver scored 21 points to lead Fisk to a road win.
DENMARK, S.C. - Keeli Burton-Oliver led the charge with 21 points, while Jayla Bibbs had another standout performance, adding 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds as the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (8-13, 8-6 HBCUAC) held on to defeat Voorhees University (8-8, 4-8 HBCUAC) 59-54 in an HBCUAC East Division clash from Denmark, South Carolina.
The victory, its second in a row, now places Fisk in second place in the division, but they are tied in the loss column with Talladega (7-6) and Oakwood (5-6). With only four more conference games to play, the Lady Bulldogs need to keep on winning.
"We have to take care of our own business because we can't afford to drop anymore games," said Fisk head coach Victoria Crawford. These two wins were huge to get, especially because we lost a tough one (against Oakwood) at home. We still have work to do."
Following a basket by Dee Scott, Fisk took a 13-11 lead at the 4:42 mark of the first quarter and maintained it throughout the game Burton-Oliver and Bibbs were instrumental in the third quarter, combining for 15 of the team's 20 points while only conceding ten. Teniya Williams' three-pointer extended Fisk's lead to 55-38 with 6:45 remaining. Despite a late 16-4 run by Voorhees, they couldn't close the gap beyond five points.
Burton-Oliver now has scored double figures in seven straight games, averaging 16.1 points per game during that stretch. Fisk will jump out of conference play to take on Johnson University at home on Wednesday.
