Lady Bulldogs Conclude Regular Season with a Setback Against Stillman College
Keeli Burton-Oliver scores 16 points and grabs ten boards but couldn't hold off top seed Stillman
NASHVILLE - The Fisk University Lady Bulldogs faced a challenging finale to their regular basketball season, falling 75-53 against the Stillman College Tigers on February 20, 2025. The game, held at Fisk University, was crucial as it represented the final showdown of the regular season for the Lady Bulldogs.
With the win, Stillman clinched the top seed in the HBCUAC postseason tournament. From the start, Stillman enforced their will, scoring the first 12 points of the game. They went up by as much as 19 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs showed resilience, battling intensely, and closed the gap to ten, but a halftime score of 43-28 in favor of Stillman set the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Keeli Burton-Oliver led the scoring for Fisk with 16 points, actively pushing the team forward. Jayla Bibbs dominated on the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds, with Burton-Oliver adding another 10, showcasing a strong frontcourt display. Courtney Lumpkins contributed significantly with six assists and led the steals with three, highlighting her versatile role in the team's efforts.
Fisk's gameplan was to feed Burton-Oliver as much as possible. Stillman used their quickness and help side pressure to make it tough on the Lady Bulldogs to feed the interior. On offense, they shot a blitzering 12-of-23 from behind the three-point arc. Raena Suggs scored 19 points off the bench to lead all scorers. Jaeda Minter scored all 15 of her points from three point land going 5-of-8. Kasahra Preston, who went 6-of-7 from behind the arc in the previous game against Wilberforce, followed that up going 4-of-7 against Fisk for all 12 of her points.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs displayed commendable team spirit and individual performances, spotlighting the potential within the team as they move forward to the postseason. They are set to face Voorhees University in the HBCUAC First Round on February 25, 2025, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Holding a current record of 10-16 overall and 10-8 in the HBCUAC, the Bulldogs aim to leverage their experiences from the regular season to advance in the playoffs.
