Lineup Stalls for (RV) Buffs Baseball in Loss against Spartanburg Methodist
MILLIGAN, Tenn. — A non-conference midweek contest for the (RV) Milligan University baseball team against Spartanburg Methodist College on Anglin Field did not turn out the way that the Buffaloes had hoped, as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the visiting Pioneers.
A run came in to score in the top of the first for SMC on a baserunning play, where the runner at first was picked off and entered a rundown, allowing their runner at third to come in and score.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Buffaloes manufactured a run after a leadoff double by Wyatt Heidle to right field. A sacrifice bunt by Braxton Baird, flowed by an RBI groundout by Bryce Safferwich tied the score 1-1.
Milligan had a tough top of the eighth inning, as they committed a costly error to allow a run, as well as a sac fly to right field. Those two plays each brought in a run, making it 3-1 in favor of the Pioneers.
Additionally, Spartanburg Methodist added an RBI double in the top of the ninth for insurance that they ultimately would not need, as they held on to the 4-1 win over the Buffs.
The offense for the Buffaloes never got going, as the only player to notch two hits was Heidle in the ninth spot of the order. The team had just five base hits and only one extra-base hit.
Milligan's pitching staff had a good day, as Wesley Babcock started with five innings of one-run ball. He allowed just three hits and tallied a pair of strikeouts and only a single walk. Brycen Denton then tossed two scoreless frames on two hits surrendered. T.J. Kuhn struggled with command, walking two hitters in 0.1 innings and allowing two runs (one earned). Patrick Collins tossed 1.2 innings while giving up one unearned run on one hit.
It was an unfortunate result for the Buffs, who now must refocus ahead of a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) set against No. 6 Reinhardt University on March. 7-8. Friday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Waleska, Ga.
