Women's Soccer ends 2024 season with hard-fought match against Talladega College

FLOWOOD, Miss. - The Wiley University women's soccer team close the 2024 season with a 2-0 loss in a hard-fought Continental Athletic Conference match against Talladega College on Saturday at Liberty Park.

The Lady Wildcats (2-7-1, 1-1 CAC) played a full season for the first time since 2018. They finish the season with two wins and 24 goals. Yajaira Hernandez and Esmeralda Vazquez wrapped up their careers. Hernandez tallied five goals and Vazquez netted two goals.

Despite having a 20-6 shot disadvantage, Wiley competed and held Talladega scoreless for over 40 minutes. Destiny Allison made five saves in the first half. Alexse Orozco and Deyanara Hernandez put up shots in the first 10 minutes but were high and wide. A foul by the Lady Wildcats set up Talladega's first goal.

In the 56th minute, Rebecca Garza's shot was blocked, and Carissa Escamilla's header went wide in the 64th minute. Nadia Hernandez put a shot on goal that was saved by Talladega goalkeeper Natalie Need in the 70th minute. Deyanara Hernandez's shot was rejected two minutes later. The Tornadoes added an insurance goal in the 80th minute. Leah Ramirez took over in goal in the second half and stopped two of three shots.

The Lady Wildcats are expected to return most of their players, including Deyanara Hernadez who scored seven goals, Destiny Allison, who made 57 saves, ranks fourth in the Continental Athletic Conference as of Saturday night, and starting defensemen Escamilla and Orozco. Head coach Andrew Benetiz will hit the recruiting trail to strengthen the team for a more successful 2025 campaign.
