Milligan Volleyball Sweeps Union Commonwealth for Second Time in 2024
MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The Milligan University volleyball team completed the middle third of their three-match streak of battles from the comforts of Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Friday night against Union Commonwealth University. The Buffaloes handled their business, achieving their second sweep of the Bulldogs this season (25-19, 25-20, 25-18).
Much of the opening set was a tight, back-and-forth fracas, but the Buffa scored five straight points with a 16-15 lead to make it 21-15. That run would make the difference, as Milligan then went on to win 25-19 in the set.
After starting up 5-0 in the second set, the Bulldogs fought back to tie things at 10-10. After a few runs by both sides, Milligan finally rushed out to a 25-20 win to take a commanding two-sets-to-none lead.
The final of the three sets was never in doubt. Milligan coasted to a 25-18 set triumph to sweep both matchups with Union Commonwealth in 2024.
Ella Maiden's 13 kills on a .375 attacking clip led the squad, while Shelby Miller added 12 putaways to the team tally while converting at .312 on 32 swings. Avery Maiden and Addison Varney combined for 18 kills with nine each. Varney impressed with a hitting percentage of .533. Kolbie Greene put forth a 40-assist night, dishing out dimes all evening long.
Zoie Larkins' 19 digs led the team, while Greene followed her lead with 12 pickups. Sierra Still was next on the roster with eight digs in the victory. E. Maiden recorded two solo blocks in the effort, and the Buffs got single block assists from A. Maiden and Varney, as well.
A final home contest in the three-bout string is next on the docket tomorrow morning, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m., as the Buffaloes will try to avenge a defeat from earlier in the season against Johnson University.
