Men's Basketball unable to keep pace with Voorhees
XENIA, Ohio - The Wiley University men's basketball team was unable to overcome Voorhees University's early shooting outburst as it dropped its final game of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Crossover 64-55 on Tuesday at the Athletes in Action Headquarters.
The loss ends a two-game winning streak for the Wildcats as they split their games at the crossover. They were outshot 57.7 to 32.1 percent in the first half. Voorhees went 8-for-15 from 3-point territory while the Wildcats only made 2 of 11. Wiley never led and trailed by as many as 23.
It rallied in the second half as the Tigers only hit four of 21 shot attempts and missed all eight 3-pointers. Shamir Mosley made three shots and Bobby Baker III got a steal and dished to Devon Barshow for a layup, which cut the deficit to 14. A second-chance bucket by Demarius Pitts brought the margin to single digits with 3:45 remaining. A layup by Mosley pulled Wiley within seven. It couldn't move closer as Voorhees made seven of 10 free throw attempts to seal the game.
The Wildcats (5-6, 3-4 HBCUAC) were outshot 40.4 to 34.9 percent. They were also edged in rebounds, 38-37. Wiley captured the turnover battle 16-14. Mosley led the team with 14 points, hitting six of 11 shots. Tayvion Fisher followed with 12 points, adding four rebounds and a block. Jalen Bates led the team with 11 rebounds and three steals.
Wiley will return to the court on January 3 when it opens its second HBCUAC Crossover at Talladega College.
