A return back home was just what the Cottey Comets needed to get back into the winning swing, as they took down the Avila Eagles 64-54 in Hinkhouse Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The game also served as a cancer awareness event, complete with a raffle to raise money and support members of the Cottey community going through that battle.
Cottey jumped out to a 17-10 lead after the first quarter, with AuShae Farris putting up five points in the first frame off the bench. The Comets would continue to control the 2nd quarter, leading to a halftime score of 35-22. A balanced scoring attack and smothering defense by the Comets led to the comfortable halftime score.
Avila would make the game closer in the 3rd quarter, putting up their highest scoring quarter of the contest, cutting the lead to single digits at times. In the 4th, the teams essentially went bucket for bucket, leading to the final scoreline of 64-54. Cottey had three scorers in double figures, with Sarah Hunt leading the way with 20. Autumn Wallace would put up 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Claudia Hadlock would finish with 11 points.
The win takes Cottey's record to 3-2 Overall. They take the road to Rolla, MO for an exhibition matchup with Missouri S&T this Saturday, game time is set for 7pm. Fans can watch that exhibition matchup here: https://cotteycomets.com/links/vz38o0
