
Marshall, Mo. - The Central Methodist Women's Basketball team fell in a tough overtime road battle to Missouri Valley College by a score of 65-59 Wednesday night in Marshall, Missouri.
Central now stands at 7-15 and 4-14 in the Heart of America, while Missouri Valley improves to 17-4 and 13-4 in conference action.
Central outscored Missouri Valley 12-6 in the first quarter, propelled by five points from Kaelyn Johnson in the opening frame.
The Vikings showed more resistence in the second quarter, outscoring Central 12-10. CMU still held a slim 22-18 lead at the halftime break.
Sharay Trotter scored the first points of the second half, knocking down a jumper following a defensive rebound on the other end of the floor.
Less than a minute later, Nautica Washington converted a three-point basket to push Central's lead to 27-22.
The Vikings did well to respond, holding CMU to just five points through the final eight minutes of the frame.
Central remained in front 32-31 entering the fourth and with 1:20 remaining in regulation, the score was tied at 45-45.
With a minute left, Tristan Porter found Mary Copeland in the low block, with Copeland converting the layup to put Central up by two.
The Vikings would tie the game with 25 seconds remaining.
Following a turnover by Central, MVC had an opportunity for the game-winner with five seconds remaining. Their jump shot attempt fell short as the clock expired, resulting in overtime.
MVC opened the period with a 5-0 run and never looked back, escaping with a six-point win.
Washington led all scorers with 22 points while adding six rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Trotter was the only other Eagle to land in double figures with 11 points. The senior also tallied six rebounds and four assists to her statline.
Porter nearly cracked double figures, scoring eight points.
It was a tough shooting night for both teams, with each shooting below 40 percent from the field. Central struggled to find an offensive rhythm, committing 20 total turnovers.
CMU made only eight trips to the charity stripe, compared to 19 trips for Missouri Valley.
MVC held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding Central, 40-38.
The Eagles return home to host Graceland University Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
