Lady Bulldogs Defeat DII Rival Central State
BY JAY SLEDGE
WILBERFORCE, OH - For 77 years, the rivalry between the Wilberforce Bulldogs and the Central State Marauders (formerly Wilberforce State) has been one of passion, pride, and fierce competition. But for the last decade, the Lady Marauders had dominated the annual matchup, turning their victories into a painful tradition for the Lady Bulldogs. Last night the Marauders arrived on North Bickett confident, expecting to extend their streak to 11. What they didn't anticipate was a revitalized Lady Bulldogs squad and the strategic brilliance of first-year head coach Rachel Naughton.
The packed gymnasium buzzed with anticipation, every play was met with deafening cheers or groans as the game featured eight ties and five lead changes, the score rarely stretching beyond a 10-point margin. The Lady Bulldogs fed off the energy of their loyal fans, bringing grit and determination to every possession.
Coach Naughton, who took the helm just six months ago, orchestrated a masterclass to bring home a victory that shattered the 10-year drought. Her impact on the program has been immediate, and last night, her vision for the team came alive. "Beating our NCAA DII rival was a huge victory for us—not just for bragging rights but also in terms of team morale," Naughton shared postgame. "This game showcased our hard work and determination, and it's a testament to our growth as a team."
Sophomore transfer guard Makyla Tucker, coming from Vincennes, led the offensive charge with 18 points, two assists, and three steals. Shooting 50% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc, Tucker embodied the fiery spirit of her team. "We all was just locked in all day," Tucker said, her excitement radiating. "We knew what we had to do to win the game."
Her teammates echoed that energy, contributing in critical moments. Dreaan Pryce delivered 12 points on a sharp 67% shooting, adding eight rebounds and four steals. Constance Chaplin, the team's leading scorer on the season, made her presence known with a balanced performance: eight points, six rebounds, eight assists, four steals, and a block. Gabby Thomas and Dayania Johnson also chipped in crucial points and defensive stops, showing that every Lady Bulldog had a role in this monumental victory.
Naughton and her players were quick to emphasize the team's collective effort. "We executed our strategy well, and I couldn't be prouder of how everyone stepped up in such a high-stakes matchup," said Naughton. Tucker added, "I feel like everybody who had on a yellow jersey contributed to this BIG DUB!" The game was a showcase of rivalry basketball at its finest—intense, close, and filled with moments that had the crowd on their feet. As the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard confirmed the end of the decade-long drought, sending Bulldog fans into a frenzy.
With three wins in their last five games, the Lady Bulldogs head into the Christmas break riding a wave of momentum. They'll take the court in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, at the second HBCUAC Crossover Pod to kick off 2025. If this victory is any indication, the Lady Bulldogs are a team to watch, with their sights set on a bright, winning future.
