(Ann Arbor, MI) Concordia Baseball welcomed Cornerstone to town Saturday afternoon to pick back up WHAC play for two more conference games. The Cardinals held on for a 4-0 victory in game one before a second-half offensive explosion in game two gave them a 14-4 victory.
Game 1: Concordia 4 - Cornerstone 0
Pitching was the story in game one as Logan Morris dominated on the bump for CUAA. The starter went 5.2 innings pitch allowing just three hits and zero runs. Blake Weaver followed that up by pitching the final 1.1 innings and added a strikeout to give the Cardinals a shut-out win in game one - their third of the year.
Tyler Wressel got things started in the second inning when he tripled to right field. Tyler Lawson pinch ran for him and scored on Justin Kozlowski double to the gap. Kozlowski would later score on a passed ball, making the score 2-0. In the fourth inning, Gus Simon doubled home Kozlowski to score again. Thanks to an error from the Golden Eagles' pitcher, Simon scored to put CUAA up four. That would be all the offense the Cardinals would need and the game would later end at 4-0.
Game 2: Concordia 14 - Cornerstone 4
Ethan Pollard got the nod in game two, going five innings allowing four runs on four hits. Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys came on for what would be the final two innings, and allowed zero runs on zero hits while tossing two strikeouts.
Cornerstone got off to a fast start in the first inning, scoring two runs off of an RBI single and an RBI groundout. CUAA would not score until the fourth inning when a passed ball got by the catcher to score Tyler Lawson. Harrison Ryan and Alex Piotrowski walked, and Jake Kuhlman was able to score two runs on a double down the line to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game. Cornerstone quickly responded with an RBI triple and a sac fly to put them back up 4-3, putting CUAA's 11-game win streak in jeopardy.
A Gus Simon sac fly brought home Lawson in the bottom half of the fifth to knot the game at 4 a piece. In the bottom of the sixth inning the Cardinals turned things on and were able to rally. The inning started with Harrison Ryan and Matthew Dubrick hit by pitches in a two-strike count. A passed ball was able to score pinch runner Clayton McKinstry to put CUAA back on top. Josh Burke later doubled to score pinch runner Alex Czyzewski and Dubrick. Kozlowski and Simon were both able to single, scoring Burke and Tyler Wressel. Matthew Dubrick capped the inning off with a double to score McKinstry and Simon to put the Cardinals up 12-4. In the seventh inning, Kyle Hebner singled home Alex Czyzewski to bring the score to 13-4. Tyler Lawson completed the run rule via a sac fly to score Hebner and give CUAA another series sweep!
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow at home as they welcome rival Madonna to town for another WHAC doubleheader beginning at 1pm!
