HIT PARADE
Dubs Run Wild in Sweep of Providence
By Brandon Petersen
The Warrior bats put in overtime Saturday at OCC where the Westcliff baseball team wrapped up a tidy sweep of Providence with a 18-4 win.
On Friday, Westcliff pounced on Providence at soggy JSerra with a 3-2 walk-off in 10 innings, and a 10-4 laugher.
Saturday, the Warriors had forced four pitching changes by the fourth inning, and the bottom of the second lasted a full 40 minutes.
In that frame, the Warriors batted around twice. The big knocks came from Micah Wallette, who smashed a bases-clearing, three-run double, and KJ Moo-Young, who scored both Patrick Morgan and Jack Varney with a double to the gap in left-center.
All told, the Dubs scored 10 in the frame to put the game away early.
Camden Cooper struck out the side in the first and cruised from there, finishing five innings of five-hit ball with nine strikeouts.
Cooper was spelled by Tyler Linnel in the sixth.
Linnel worked the rest of the way, finishing with a strikeout.
On Friday, Kyle Douphner got the win in Game 1 after tossing six and two-thirds of four-hit ball with five strikeouts after taking over for Cameron Witte (four Ks) in the third.
"Being able to call on Douph again is what we have been missing," Westcliff skipper Dylan Hoffman said. "He made an impact in his debut today against some good hitters."
Speaking of good hitters, Nick Malvini provided the blast of the weekend, a towering, 420-foot moonshot to right center for a grand slam that made it 17-4 in the bottom of the sixth Saturday.
It's been a homerun party for the Dubs as of late.
On Friday night, Morgan broke the Westcliff single-season program record with his ninth homerun of the campaign.
Both Morgan and Varney (7), have an outside shot of matching Trey Harmon's all-time program record with 15 jacks if they can remain hot.
Morgan has been on an absolute tear lately.
The Dubs (21-10, 4-2) will now turn their attention to La Sierra.
That series kicks off next Friday at the Great Park with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
The doubleheader conclusion will start Sunday at 11 a.m.
