Gibson hits 43rd Consecutive Double-Double as Knights Defeat Wilberforce
January 4, 2025
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. [January 4, 2025] - The Knights of Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) are on a five-game winning streak in the HBCU Athletic Conference after Friday night's victory over East Division foe Wilberforce University. The Knights dominated the Bulldogs and had a lead as large as 19 points before defeating them 91-82 for their fifth consecutive conference win.
Jamal Gibson continued his double-double dominance with 26 points and 20 rebounds. He now has 938 career points in just 45 games played and is on track to hit 1,000 career points during this week's HBCUAC Crossover.
The Knights outrebounded the Bulldogs 42-29 and scored 54 points in the paint. Wilberforce held off a blowout performance by the Knights by scoring 43 points off 31 turnovers.
"Turnovers have been our worst enemy," said SUNO Head Coach James A. Matthews, III. "During this winning streak, we have done better with limiting our turnovers. Tonight's performance is not indicative of our progress in that area. The players know I'm disappointed in our regression, even though this is our first game in two weeks. My expectation is to continue building and moving forward, not taking steps backward. With that said, it's better to learn these lessons during a win, and I believe we will do much better against Rust Saturday night."
SUNO shot 64% from the field against the Bulldogs, including 43% from beyond the arc. Their unselfish play led to 23 assists and four players scoring in double digits. They ended the game with eight steals and six blocks.
Tyon Thompson finished with 17 points and a game-high six assists. Devin Daniels added 13 points and a game-high four blocks while Johnson chipped in 11 points and 4 assists.
The Knights return to action Saturday night at 8 p.m. for a matchup against Rust College. The contests last season between the two teams were heavyweight battles, with SUNO falling 98-100 in double overtime the first game and 60-67 the second meeting. The Bearcats are currently 2-5 in HBCUAC and have not played since December 21 in an exhibition game against Louisiana Tech.
Saturday's matchup tips off at 8 p.m. CT at Stillman College's Birthright Alumni Hall. The game will be broadcast live on SUNO Knights TV.
