MILLIGAN, Tenn. – On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon on Anglin Field, the Milligan University softball team did battle with the Truett McConnell University Bears in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader. Neither game went well for the Buffs' offense, as they ended up falling in two shutouts.
Milligan's struggle with the bats was not exclusive in the first game, as neither team scored a run until the top of the seventh, as TMU put up a three-run frame with two unearned tallies to take the eventual 3-0 win. A two-run double and an error allowed all three runs in the game.
More of the same manifested in the second game through the first four frames, as neither side put up a run until the top of the fifth, when a pair of runs scored for TMU on RBI singles.
The Bears grabbed another tally in the sixth on an RBI single to center and would score three more in the seventh. They grabbed a run on a bunt single that was subsequently tossed into the outfield allowing runners to advance. Then, a run-scoring single and a wild pitch closed the book on the game, as the 6-0 score would hold.
The Buffs couldn't put anything together offensively, as no one on their roster had multiple hits on the day. Jordan Roulettwheeler had the only hit for MU in game one, and Ashley Worley, Alexis Brown, Alana Parsons and Hadley York had single knocks in the latter tilt.
One positive on the day was the Buffaloes' pitching performances. In game one, Bree Presnell tossed three innings of three-hit work with two strikeouts before leaving with an injury. She was replaced by Katelin Secrist who didn't allow a run until the seventh, when two unearned runs and one earned tally came across. She threw for four frames, allowing five hits and punching out two.
Sadie Shoun kept her squad in the game in the second bout, as she tossed six innings of three-run (one earned) ball on 10 hits allowed and five looking strikeouts. Roulettwheeler came in but did not record an out in the seventh, while allowing two runs on one hit and a walk. Adrianna Piascik finished the game by allowing an unearned run on two hits with a strikeout.
The Buffs will now host the Brenau University Golden Tigers on Saturday, Mar. 22, as they play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Milligan will be in search of a two AAC triumphs.
