Milligan Tennis Teams Sweep Truett McConnell at Mathes Tennis Center
MILLIGAN, Tenn. - On Saturday, the Milligan University Tennis squads were playing host to Truett McConnell University in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play at Mathes Tennis Center. The result of the day was two huge 7-0 sweeps for the Buffaloes, with perfect days on both the men's and women's sides.
For the men in singles, all six players earned triumphs in rather simple fashion. Gonzaga Lafarga led the way with a 6-1, 6-3 result, as Michal Curlej put forth a 6-1, 6-2 effort in match No. 2. The third match was a 6-0, 6-1 win for Tomas Tenil, and Thiago Petry notched a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the fourth battle. Martin Mercarder's 6-1, 6-0, and Marcos Moreno's 6-0, 6-0 sweep rounded out singles competition.
Doubles consisted of a 6-4 triumph by Ryan Thomas and Petry, a 6-3 win by Lafarga and Brayden Kennedy, and a 6-2 decision in favor of Moreno and Tenil to earn the Buffaloes the doubles point.
The women had a dominant singles day, as well, starting off with Lee Ann Endler's 6-2, 6-0 win. Marta Miralles won by a 6-3, 6-3 final, while Sophie Dunman snatched a 6-0, 6-4 win. Lauren Wimmer's 6-2, 6-0 decision was another bright spot in singles, while Tiana Shelton (6-1, 6-3) and Trinity Fox (6-0, 6-0) were responsible for the last two victories.
Dunman and Miralles teamed up as the No. 1 doubles pairing to sweep their opponents off the court 6-0. That was followed by the closest match of the day, as Shelton and Endler combined to pull off a 7-6 win with a tiebreak score of 7-2. Then, Hannah Dove and Wimmer pulled off a 6-3 win in the third doubles match.
Both teams' seasons will continue on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at 2 p.m. in Barbourville, Ky. at Union Commonwealth University, as they will each be looking to move to 2-1 in AAC competitions.
