Wiley University men's basketball player Tayvion Fisher scored a career-high 25 points off the bench however, it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell 84-70 against No. 12 Louisiana State University of Alexandria in Saturday's season opener at Alumni Gymnasium.
Fisher hit eight of nine shot attempts, including 3-for-4 from 3-point territory. Preseason All-Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference selection Demarius Pitts followed with 19 points on an 8-for-14 shooting performance. He shared the team lead in rebounds with Devon Barshow, who contributed 11 points. Jalen Bates, Fisher, Pitts and Barshow each recorded two steals.
The Wildcats (0-1) outshot the Generals 40.8 to 40 percent but made eight fewer field goals, hitting 20-for-49 while LSUA sank 28 of 70 shot attempts. Wiley was edged 43-39 in rebounds, allowing 18 on the offensive boards. The turnover battle went to the Generals as Wiley gave up 25 and forced 18.
Wiley only made one field goal in the first seven minutes of the game, which allowed LSU-Alexandria to build a double-digit lead. It trailed by as many as 13. Three-pointers by Fisher and Shamir Mosley closed the margin to six with 3:32 remaining. Bates got a steal and dished to Fisher to pull the Wildcats within four. LSU-Alexandria hit a shot and made four free throws to take a 41-32 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Wildcats only hit one shot in the first six minutes, which helped LSU-Alexandria push the lead to 15 points. Wiley could not make a rally.
The season-opening homestand continues on November 2 with the Wildcats facing Arkansas Baptist College for its 2024 Homecoming game.
