Wiley University women's soccer player Deyanara Hernandez scored the program's first goal in nearly six years. Still, the Lady Wildcats fell 10-1 in their season-opening match against Nelson University on Thursday at Pemberton Field.
In the 67th minute, Hernandez out-maneuvered a defenseman and kicked the ball into the right corner of the net - putting Wiley on the board for the first time since October 27, 2018. She was one of three players who put up a shot. Diana Garcia and Carissa Escamilla got the other two.
Nelson - formerly known as Southwestern Assemblies of God - controlled the action from the opening kickoff. It scored in the fourth minute and added three more from the 21st to the 33rd minute.
Wiley (0-1-0) allowed four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Ten freshmen made their debuts, including starting goalkeeper Destiny Allison, who stopped 10 shots in 70 minutes. Leah Ramirez stopped three shots in 19:30.
The Lady Wildcats return to action on Saturday when they visit North American University.
