Buffs Volleyball Uses Efficient Attacking Clip to Sweep Montreat
MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The Milligan University volleyball team played their second game of two on back-to-back days on Saturday morning inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse against Montreat College. After earning a sweep over the Cavaliers (25-12, 25-15, 25-9), the Buffaloes now have obtained sole possession of third place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).
From the very start, Milligan was dominant against Montreat. After starting tied 4-4, the Buffaloes rattled off nine straight points to take a 13-4 lead. From that point on, the Buffs cruised to a 25-12 set win to begin the morning.
Much of that continued in the second set, and the consistency did not waver for Milligan. They would coast to a 25-15 triumph in the second set of the three-set bout.
Polishing off their .341 hitting percentage for the match, the Buffs would win 25-9 in the last set to clinch the victory.
Shelby Miller converted on 12 of her 24 swings in the day, with just a couple of errors. She was the lone Buffalo to manage double-digit putaways. The Maiden sisters combined for 17 kills, including nine by Ella Maiden and eight by Avery Maiden. Impressively, all three of them attacked at greater than .400 for the match. Kolbie Greene dished out 27 assists across three sets.
Grace Sanderson led the way for the Buffaloes in the dig department, picking up 10 Montreat attacks. The next highest number of pickups came from Zoie Larkins, who supplied eight of them. Greene added seven of her own and both Riley Brinn and A. Maiden had six digs apiece. E. Maiden's single solo block and five block assists led the team, followed by three block assists by Miller. Greene added two, and the pairing of Addison Varney and Kira Ryan had one block assist each.
After the Buffs seventh straight triumph, they will look ahead to Tuesday night's home matchup with Bluefield, who Milligan fell to in straight sets earlier this season. It will be Dig Pink night, recognizing breast cancer awareness, for the match that begins at 6:30 p.m. at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
