Milligan Volleyball Drubs Bluefield in Straight Sets
MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The Milligan University volleyball team went into Tuesday evening's match against Bluefield University having won seven matches in a row. That streak would not end on this night, as the Buffaloes walloped the Rams in a convincing three-set decision (25-13, 25-11, 25-15).
From the word go, the Buffs were dominant. Bluefield tallied more errors than kills in the match, while Milligan was pristine in terms of attacking, making only six errors across three sets. None of those six came in the opening set, in which Milligan coasted from the start to a 25-13 win.
Only two attacking miscues occurred for the Buffs in the second set, which they led at one point by a tally of 16-3. In the end, it would be a simple 25-11 set triumph to send Bluefield to their last chance to keep the match alive.
After an early surge in the third set by Bluefield to go up 5-3, Milligan scored six of the following seven points to take a 9-6 lead into a Rams timeout. That stoppage did nothing for the visitors, as the Buffaloes coasted to a 25-15 win to complete the dominant sweep.
The Maiden sisters, Ella Maiden (10 kills/13 attempts) and Avery Maiden (11 kills/25 attempts) led the way offensively in a funky game on the offensive score sheet. Kolbie Greene's 24 assists led the way in the table-setting category.
Zoie Larkins had a team-best nine digs and Riley Brinn followed that up with seven of her own. Sierra Still added six as the other remaining Buff to tally more than five pickups. A. Maiden had three solo stuffs and one block assist, while Shelby Miller supplied 2 solos and an assist. E. Maiden had one solo and two block assists, while Addison Varney (3), Greene (2) and Kira Ryan (1) all added block helpers.
It was a bit of revenge served by the Bufflaoes after falling to Bluefield earlier this season in a sweep, as they now look forward to Thursday evening's tilt against Pikeville inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse, looking for their ninth straight triumph.
