Softball sweeps Goshen College

Game 1- The Cougars got on the board in the top of the second inning after the Leafs committed an error, and Sam Baker singled, each scoring one run. Ellie singled, which helped the Leafs tie the game at two in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, the Cougars broke up the tie when Lena Viggiano singled, scoring one run. Then an error followed to extend the lead to 5-2. Elle Sauder started the game for USF. She gave up seven hits and five runs (three earned) over seven innings, striking out six and walking two. Esme led things off in the circle for Gohen. She gave up seven hits and seven runs (three earned) over six innings, striking out two and walking four.

Baker and Viggiano each collected two hits for the Cougs. Dani Karr, Macie Dowd, Baker, and Viggiano each drove in one run. Anna Smith led with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating four walks for the game. USF turned one double play in the game.

Ellie, the number nine hitter for Goshen, led the way with two runs batted in. The left fielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Ellie, Ali, and Carissa each collected two hits for the Leafs.

Game 2- Both teams were strong in the circle on Saturday, but the Cougs defeated Goshen 3-2. Mackenzie Rust started the game for USF and recorded 21 outs. The Cougs got on the board in the first inning after Sam Baker scored after tagging up. USF scored two runs in the top of the third on a home run to left field by Macie Dowd.

#32 hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth for the Leafs.

Rust earned the win for Cougars. She gave up six hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. Ali took the loss Goshen, who went four and one-third innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, striking out none and walking two.

Dowd provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Cougars with three runs batted in. The number three hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Baker set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading USF with two hits in three at bats. Baker stole two bases.

The Cougars return to action Sunday when they take on Marian University at 1pm.
