No. 5 Central Shuts Out Briar Cliff in Season Opener

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 5 Central Methodist Women's Soccer team shut out Briar Cliff University by a score of 5-0 in the 2024 season opener Saturday night at Davis Field.

The Eagles begin 2024 1-0, while the Chargers fall to 0-1.

Senior forward Kirstine Lykke started the scoring for the Eagles in just the ninth minute of play, as the All-American dribbled down the endline and flicked the ball over the keepers' head for the first goal of 2024.

Less than four minutes later, senior captain Andrea Jimenez was fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick. The native of Denver, Colorado converted the PK to put Central up 2-0 12 minutes into the match.

Coming out of the halftime break with a 2-0 lead, Central's offense peppered the Chargers' defense with 16 second half shots. The Eagles found the back of the net three more times in the final 45, as Lacey Ann Murray scored five minutes into the half for her first goal of the year.

In the 58th minute, Paula Castro found Jimenez for Central's fourth goal of the match, which also secured a brace for Jimenez. Lykke joined her teammate with a brace, as she scored unassisted in the 73rd minute.

Altogether, Central tallied 23 total shots with 14 coming on frame. The Chargers finished the evening with just four shots, including two on goal.

Madison Priebe earned her first win in between the posts for CMU, playing 68 minutes and collecting two saves. Candela Blanco finished the match, playing the final 22 minutes.

Central remains at home to host William Woods University Wednesday, August 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Davis Field.
