
There is no place like home is a popular saying, and for Cottey Volleyball, that proved true this past weekend. The Comets were able to grab a pair of 3-0 victories over Harris-Stowe State University and the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in American Midwest Conference action.
First on the docket was Harris-Stowe on Friday, with the Comets going on multiple big runs and controlling the entire flow of the match. The Comets would snag 25-20, 25-19, and 25-14 W's on their way to thier first conference victory of 2024. It was a group effort, with Tatum Marang and Gracie Mead leading the charge for Cottey, getting 11 and 9 Kills respectively. Senior Laurencia Botts was the leader in Assists with 13, while fellow Senior Staley Stallaby would join her with 10 of her own. Mead and Marang would also prove to be strong defensive stalwarts as well, logging 4 and 3 solo blocks. The win kickstarted the weekend, leading into Saturdays match with UHSP.
A day later, the Comets kept it rolling. This one was a little more back and forth, but Cottey gathered 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 victories. Marang once again led in Kills with 14, while Magdalen Dougherty joined her in double figures with 10. It was Stallaby directing the offense effectively this match, garnering 17 Assists. On the defensive end, Kailee Hooper had 24 Digs to pace the back line. Cottey also celebrated Military Appreciation Day, complete with a ceremony by the Nevada High School Air Force Junior ROTC program presenting the colors and recognizing military personnel in attendance.
The pair of wins lifted Cottey's record to 8-15 Overall, 2-4 in AMC conference play. Currently, the Comets sit in the crucial 8th spot, the final spot for the conference tournament. The Comets hit the road for a pair of conference matchups against Missouri Baptist and Hannibal-LaGrange next weekend.
