Football routs Madonna 67-6 for homecoming victory

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia football celebrated an exciting Homecoming before a large crowd on Saturday afternoon as they opened MSFA Mideast Division play against Madonna.  The Cardinals jumped out to a quick start and rolled to a 67-6 victory.   

 

Colby Kohmescher threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the rushing attack with 75 yards.  Brylen Parker had 69 rush yards and a touchdown.  Elijah Taylor punched in a touchdown on the ground and Brandon Stewart added two rush touchdowns.  Harmon Devries led receivers with 42 yards and a touchdown.  Seeger DeGayner also caught a touchdown in the game.   

 

On defense, Chase Maynard led the team with 16 tackles.  Liam Karry finished second with eight tackles.  David Cagle and Evan Pittenger tied for third with six tackles apiece.  Anthony Vann, Davion Coats, and Ethan Burrows all recorded interceptions.  Coats' INT went for a "pick six" and he also returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown.   

 

 

Concordia received the opening kickoff.  Both teams traded defensive stops, but the Cardinals capitalized on a bad snap to stop a Madonna punt attempt.  CUAA converted early with Brandon Stewart rushing for a four-yard touchdown.  Madonna countered with a scoring drive, but Ethan Burrows blocked the PAT attempt.  The Cardinals responded with a 10-play, 77-yard scoring drive highlighted by a 53-yard run by quarterback Colby KohmescherBrandon Stewart punched in a three-yard touchdown to put CUAA up 14-6 after the first quarter. 

 

Early in the second quarter, Parker Shuman blocked a field goal which was returned by Davion Coats 66 yards for a touchdown. On the next series, Kelly Matthews returned the fumble 17 yards for a touchdown.  The Cardinals made a 9-play, 90-yard drive later in the quarter with Colby Kohmescher finding Seeger DeGayner on a quick slant for a 3-yard touchdown.  With 13 seconds left, Timothy Simons blocked a Madonna punt at the 22-yard line.  Caiden Thomas drilled a 23-yard field goal as time expired for a 38-6 halftime lead.   

 

Caiden Thomas converted a 35-yard field goal early in the third quarter.  The Cardinal defense remained solid with Davion Coats making a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown.  CUAA led 48-6 after the third quarter. 

 

Colby Kohmescher found Harmon Devries for a 37-yard touchdown strike early in the fourth quarter.  Anthony Vann made an interception in the endzone for the CUAA defense.  On the next series, Brylen Parker broke a 36-yard run and Elijah Taylor finished the drive with a 37-yard touchdown.  Brylen Parker recorded his own 2-yard rushing touchdown later in the quarter.  CUAA claimed the dominant 67-6 victory as time expired. 

 

Concordia will host rival Siena Heights next Saturday, October 26, at 1pm in Ferry Field at Cardinal Stadium.
