
Point Football falls to NCAA Division I, Davidson on the road
DAVIDSON, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2024) - The Point University Football Team returned to the field for a nonconference game on the big stage on ESPN Plus against NCAA Division I, Davidson College where the Skyhawks fell to the Wildcats with a final score of 42-12.
The Wildcats jumped onto the scoreboard first with a touchdown on the edge. On the defensive second drive for the Skyhawks, Point forced a big fourth down stop with Cortez Thomas disrupting everything in the backfield for a tackle for loss. Through the first quarter, Point's offense looked to move the ball to take them into the next period. A big run from Adam Sanders helped set the Skyhawks in scoring position. Mitchell Gossett put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with a 17-yard pass to Nicholas Marien for the touchdown. A missed attempt on the field goal would bring the score to 14-6 in the second quarter. The Skyhawks' defense continued to cause trouble to the Wildcats' offense by forcing multiple stops followed by a diving interception from Caleb Wade. Point's offense looked to move the ball with quick passes but would be forced to punt on a quick three and out. As the half ended, the Wildcats could not figure out Point's defense, bringing the score to 14-6 at the half.
Point's offense opened the third quarter with momentum and big runs from Adam Sanders. The Skyhawks continued pushing their way on the period's opening drive, Mitchell Gossett connecting with Payton Allen through the air. Point finished the drive with Gossett finding Quintravious Teasley in the endzone for a 15-yard touchdown. The Skyhawks looked to tie the game with a two-point conversion but Davidson's defense held up leaving the score at 14-12. The Wildcats gained momentum with two rushing touchdowns to end the third quarter and extend their lead. In the final period, the Skyhawks were held scoreless, and Davidson added two more to win with a final score of 42-12.

Mitchell Gossett made the start at Quarterback and went 16-for-39 with 150 passing yards and two touchdowns. Adam Sanders led in the backfield with nine rushes for 85 yards, his longest rush being 44 yards. Ja'Vin Jones added two rushes for 12 yards. In the air, Wesley Jones Jr. Led with four receptions for 46 yards. Payton Allen followed with three catches for 34 yards. Quintravious Teasley added three catches for 32 yards and one touchdown. Nicholas Marien contributed with four catches for 30 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Kemorion Larkin led with 17 tackles which is the 2nd most tackles in a game in program history. Ethan Binns, Logan Slagle, and Gunnar Sweatt followed with nine tackles each. Caleb Wade contributed seven tackles and one interception.
