
Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles fall to # 15 Rio Grande University
Pippa Passes, KY: On Tuesday, February 18th, the short-handed Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles returned to the hardwood at the Perry Center and "Coach J" Court to battle the powerful #15 ranked Rio Grande Red Storm. The visitors would score 60 points in the first half on their way to a 102-71 victory in River States Conference action.
In the opening period, the Lady Eagles would receive 7 big points from sophomore forward Jamie Cowan, on their way to a 22 point segment. However, the Ohio squad came out red-hot. Sparked by 18 combined points from Kaylee Darnell and Jasmine Jordan, RG would race out to a 31-22 lead after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Ohio club shot 58% and pumped in 29 more points. Although ALC's Cowan would finish the half with 15 points, the hosts would trail 60-37 at the half.
In the third period, the Buckeye club shot 52% enroute to a 31 point stanza, while the Caney Creek crew went cold, only managing 12 total points. This would propel the Red Storm to a solid 91-47 cushion with ten minutes remaining in the contest.
In the final quarter, the Pippa Passes duo of freshman guard Bailey Stewart and freshman forward Katie Marcum provided 18 of the squads 24 points in a nice segment. Unfortunately, the deficit was simply to great to overcome as Rio would take the victory.
For ALC (10-16; 5-10 RSC), Cowan sank 6-11 field goals and 9-9 foul shots for 21 points. She was joined in double figures by Stewart with 16 points on 6-10 accuracy and Marcum with 11 points on 4-7 shooting.
In addition, Cowan recorded another double-double as she grabbed 11 rebounds, Stewart led the team with 5 assists, and freshman guards Elivia Moore and Alyssa Allen both provided 2 steals.
The Caney Club finished shooting 38.3% (23-60) from the field, 20.8% (5-24) from long range, and 80% (20-25) from the foul line while adding 40 rebounds, 12 assists and 7 steals.
Darnell and Jordan paced the Red Storm (22-5; 12-3 RSC) with 31 and 29 points respectively. Additionally, their squad finished shooting 50% (33-66) from the field, 29.4% (5-17) from behind the arc, and 64.6% from the foul line, on a staggering 31-48 attempts. They also added 40 rebounds, 22 assists, and 18 steals.
The Lady Eagles conclude the regular season on Saturday, February 22nd, when they return home on Senior Day to face the formidable Shawnee State Bears (RV). Tipoff is scheduled for 3;00pm.
