Racers Edge Past Aquinas in Low Scoring Scuffle
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The nation's eighth best scoring offense was held to their lowest point total of the season Friday night at Aquinas. Despite missing the league's top scorer, UNOH prevailed with a late-game run to improve to 9-1 on the season.
The lead changed hands five times in a tight first quarter with the largest lead for either team at four points. Alycia Patterson scored twelve of the Racers 15 points in the quarter hitting four three-pointers to keep her team in front. UNOH was up two heading into the second and pushed their lead up to seven before the Saints pulled things tight again before halftime. The Racers managed to scored the final basket of the half and held a slight 31-30 lead at the break.
The first eight points of the second half belonged to the Racers as they took the games largest lead of the night, 39-30, with 7:40 left in the third. Thanks to that 8-0 run, UNOH was able to keep Aquinas at arm's length the rest of the quarter heading into the final frame up seven, 50-43.
The Saints flipped the script in the final stanza opening up with a 14-2 run of their own to go up five. Aquinas held their largest lead of the night, 62-55, with less than two minutes to play but went ice cold as UNOH stormed back scoring the next eleven points to reclaim the lead. The Saints scored a quick bucket with 19 seconds to play to go up 64-63, but Evette Lansing stepped up and drained a jumper on the opposite end before grabbing her only steal of the night to ice the game.
The night featured three ties and 13 lead changes with Aquinas outshooting UNOH 47% to 33%, a season low.
Aycia Patterson finished with a game high 21 points, all coming from three-point range. Patterson hit 7-11 attempts from outside matching the program record for three-pointers in a game for the second time in three outings. Olivia Thompson and Evette Lansing both chipped in twelve off the bench. Lansing adding eight rebounds with Jayci Allen pulling down twelve.
UNOH will play one more time before adjourning for Thanksgiving when they head to Madonna Tuesday night, November 26.
