Tigers rout Crimson Pride
Georgetown took on a new opponent on Thursday: the IU Columbus Crimson Pride. The first-year program came into Davis-Reid Alumni Gym with aspirations of an upset to jump start the program but the Tigers had other ideas. AJ Stevenson knocked down 4 threes in the 1st quarter. Abby Varney scored a career-high 20 points and Georgetown went on to a 100-49 win.
The Tigers got on the board with 3 straight free throws to start the night. Teionni McDaniel scored the first bucket off an Anna Long steal for a 5-0 lead. With 5:25 left, Anna Long hit the first of 10 Tiger 3s on the night for a 10-6 lead and a Columbus timeout. AJ Stevenson then checked in and immediately nailed 2 threes to push the lead out. Her 3rd and 4th threes of the quarter gave the Tigers a 26-10 lead with 2 minutes to go. Abby Varney nailed another long-range shot with less than a minute left as the Tigers took a 31-14 lead after 1. Georgetown shot 6-12 from 3 in the quarter and tallied 9 assists on 10 total buckets.
Despite the lead, IU Columbus still shot 50% in the opening quarter. Georgetown was determined to slow that shooting down in the 2nd. The Tigers did that and then some by holding the Crimson Pride to just 3-17 from the floor with 7 turnovers. The late 1st quarter 3 from Abby Varney got her going into the 2nd. She outscored the Crimson Pride on her own (10-8) in the 2nd as Georgetown's lead continued to swell. Georgetown shot 53% in the 2nd and finished with a 26-8 edge in points to take a 57-22 lead to halftime.
After a 10-point 2nd quarter from Varney, Georgetown got the same from Teionni McDaniel, as the Tigers continued to flex their overall talent and balance advantage on this night. McDaniel made all 5 shots she took, matching the made field goals total of the entire IU Columbus squad in the 3rd. The Tigers took an 82-38 lead to the 4th, where Izzy Lamparty took the turn as lead scorer. Lamparty scored 6 of her 13 in the 4th as Georgetown polished off the rout by holding Columbus to just 4 buckets and forcing 6 more turnovers in breaking the century mark.
Lamparty finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 3 steals off the bench. Abby Varney shot 8-11 from the floor for her 20 points and also grabbed 7 rebounds. AJ Stevenson's hot 1st quarter led her to a 19-point night. The trio totaled 52 of the Tigers' 54 bench points. Georgetown was +46 in that area. As for starters, Anna Long led the group with 16 points, followed by 14 from Teionni McDaniel. Callie Jackson did a little of everything: 5 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Sophie Smith added 6 more assists to her season tally. Georgetown's defense held Columbus to 33% shooting and forced 25 turnovers. The Tigers finished with a 32-3 edge in points off turnovers.
Georgetown now prepares for a trip to Ohio to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene next Tuesday. Tip time ahead of the Thanksgiving break is set for 3:00pm.
