Walker Climbs WBB Program Assists Ladder in Road Win at Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (14-8, 6-6 CL) picked up another Crossroads League win on the road against Goshen College (9-12, 3-9 CL) by a score of 65-60 on Saturday, February 1.

MVNU started slow and found itself trailing 13-19 after the first quarter. The second quarter remained a defensive battle. MVNU kept the score close and was able to tie the game on three separate occasions, but could never get over the hump to take the lead. At halftime, MVNU trailed 27-29.

Trailing in the third quarter 29-31, Naomi Keib drained a three to give MVNU its first lead since the 8:21 mark of the first quarter. After three, MVNU led 44-39. The Lady Cougars were now in control and never trailed the rest of the game despite Goshen keeping things close and even tying the score on multiple occasions. Ahead 53-52 with 2:59 remaining in the game, Emily Walker nailed a huge three to put MVNU up four and secure some more breathing room. Angela Roshak then hit a layup to put MVNU up six on the very next possession.

Up 61-59 with 23 seconds remaining, Katie Sprang hit the two biggest free throws of her season to make it a two-possession game. MVNU made the stops it needed in the final seconds and added more points from the charity stripe to hang on in Goshen by a final of 65-60. With her six assists in the game, Walker moved into second all-time in program history, passing Dani Ellerbrock (2016-20). The senior currently has 549 assists in her career.

MVNU held Goshen to just 37% shooting from the floor and 16.7% shooting from deep. MVNU forced 21 turnovers and scored 13 points off the Maple Leafs errors. The Lady Cougar defense had 11 steals on the defensive end of the floor.
