Avila Hands First Conference Loss to Spires

Kansas City, MO. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team faced a challenging matchup on the road against Avila University, falling 86-74 in a hard-fought contest. Despite strong individual performances, the Spires struggled to overcome their opponent's efficiency and depth, ultimately resulting in a 14-point defeat.

The game began with competitive energy as both teams exchanged baskets. However, Avila's shooting proved crucial; they finished the game with an impressive 44.1% from the field compared to Saint Mary's 34.4%. The Eagles capitalized on their scoring opportunities and showcased notable efficiency from beyond the arc (5 of 13; 38.5%) while limiting Saint Mary's three-point attempts (4 of 21; 19%).

Alanis Delgado led all scorers for the Spires with 19 points, shooting an efficient 54% from the floor on 7-of-13 shooting and contributing two assists along with two rebounds. Addison Schletzbaum also had a standout performance, particularly at the free-throw line where she converted 8 of 9 attempts, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds, and demonstrating her ability to create scoring opportunities.

Katelynn Ostronic added eight points and five rebounds but faced challenges in finding rhythm offensively throughout the game. Demi Aamold chipped in seven points while Jaylee Levario struggled from deep but managed six points total along with three assists.

Despite winning rebounding battles on both ends early in the game—collecting a total of 38 boards, including fifteen offensive rebounds—the Spires could not convert those extra possessions into significant scoring advantages against Avila's defense.
