V-Hawks Stung by Fighting Bees

DAVENPORT, Iowa  – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team narrowly fell to St. Ambrose (IA) on Wednesday evening 72-68. The V-Hawks fall to 10-5 (CCAC 3-4) while the Fighting Bees rise to 5-9 (CCAC 3-4).

Emily McCurdy opening the game for the V-Hawks with a combination of three's and free throws to score seven of the opening nine. The V-Hawks would keep a close quarter with Nora Tucker draining a three before the first 10 were up.

Taking a five point deficit the V-Hawks would work to battle back with a layup and three by McCurdy and a layup by freshman, Aubrey Dorn. With only 20 seconds remaining in the half Carly Drew would draw a foul at the three point line making all, though SAU would squeeze one last layup in before the buzzer.

Macy Stellner would take a layup to end a seven point run by the fighting bees, before knocking down another jumper. The V-Hawks would continue to battle back from behind, Nicole Johnson taking to the free throw line on an and one before Lambrigtsen would find her for another layup with 30 seconds remaining in the third.

Viterbo, only down by five would find Marley Hughes driving in the lane for a layup and Johnson making another of her own to pull the score within one point. Drawing a series of fouls McCurdy would take the free throw line twice more going 75% before the time would run out.

McCurdy led the V-Hawks from the floor with 20 points. Caitlyn Thole led the Fighting Bees with 22.

The V-Hawks outshot the Fighting Bees from three 35.0% to 27.3% though were outshot from the floor 42.9-39.7%.

The V-Hawks return to action Saturday, January 11, at St. Francis to continue conference play.
