
Bronco Volleyball Sweeps Lancers on the Road
(Yankton, SD) - In the second-to-last game of the regular season, the Hastings Broncos swept the Lancers 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) in Yankton.
Hastings got off to a good start by going up 9-5 early. The Lancers tied it up at 11, then the two teams split the next 10 points. Tied at 16-all, the Broncos won nine of the next 13 points to take the first set, 25-20. The Lancers had more kills, but the Broncos had just four attacking errors in the opening set.
In the second set, the Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to kills from freshman Makenna Sutter and senior Majesta Valasek. Valasek continued to grow the lead to 9-3 with a couple more kills, then fellow freshman Mikah O'Neill had three kills and a block in a stretch that led the Broncos to an 18-13 lead. The Lancers hung tough, but Hastings took the second set with relative ease, 25-20.
After two two teams split the first 10 points, Hastings won nine of the next 11 points to take a 14-7 lead, as Valasek and Sutter had three kills each to open the third set. Senior Miriam Miller also made an incredible play at 12-7, diving for a the ball by the sideline and able to put it in just the right spot over the net for a kill. Mount Marty responded by winning seven of nine points, then got it to within one at 20-19. From there, Hastings won five of the next six points, headlined by blocks from senior Grace Branson and sophomore Amiya Barnes, to take the third and final set, 25-20.
Valasek led the team with 11 kills, followed by Sutter and O'Neill with 10 and 9 kills, respectively. Junior Alexis Pontine had 21 assists and junior Kinzi Havranek had 10 assists. Miller led the team with 26 digs, giving her 2076 for her career, moving into second place and just 26 behind the all-time digs record at Hastings.
The Broncos will return home for their regular season match, a senior day battle versus College of Saint Mary on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7:30pm.
