Miracle rally comes up just short as DSU goes 1-1 for second straight day

Bellevue, Neb. – Dickinson State went 1-1 for the second consecutive day at the GoSarpy.com Classic in Bellevue, narrowly missing out on their second top 25 upset in as many days. After dispatching Avila (Mo.), 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-19), the Blue Hawks nearly completed a miracle comeback against #17 College of Saint Mary, falling in five sets, 3-2 (25-12, 25-23, 18-25, 29-31, 17-15).

"It was a great day to be a Blue Hawk," said head coach Stormy Siemion. "Coming out with a three-set win and then battling back from an 0-2 set deficit is something worth being proud of. Going 2-2 in this tournament is a great place to be. We know what we need to work on now and I'm excited to see the girls excel in those areas."

Game One – DSU 3 AU 0

Scarlette Schwindt had a team-high 9 kills to lead Dickinson State to the early morning sweep, as McKenzie Moser added 8 kills to go along with 20 digs. Rylee Kogolshak piloted the offense with 32 assists and added 10 digs for her third consecutive double-double.

The Blue Hawks controlled the match from the get-go, trailing only briefly early in the second set by just a single point.

The win was the first three-set win for DSU since September 3, 2022, coincidentally also over Avila at the GoSarpy.com Classic.

Game Two – CSM 3 DSU 2

Dickinson State looked to knock off another top 25 foe in GPAC member College of Saint Mary in game two, narrowly missing out on a five-set reverse sweep in what is the early leader for match of the year.

After dropping the first set 25-12, the Blue Hawks hung tight in the second set but were unable to break through, falling behind 2-0 with a 25-23 loss.

In the third set DSU finally broke through, leading the set from start to finish to stay alive.

The fourth set looked to be firmly controlled by the Blue Hawks early, as they led by as many as eight at 11-3 in the early going. The nationally ranked Flames wouldn't go away easily, however, as they clawed all the way back to forge a 24-24 tie, denying Dickinson State on consecutive match points.

The back-and-forth battle continued long into extra points before a Moser block finally broke the stalemate and knotted the match at 2-2.

Dickinson State again controlled the early action in the fifth set, leading by as many as four points at 11-7, but after DSU took a 13-10 lead, CSM responded with a 7-2 run to escape the upset.

Schwindt (15 kills, 13 digs), Moser (19 kills, 12 digs), and Kogolshak (47 assists, 12 digs) all turned in double-double performances for the Blue Hawks in a great all-around effort, while Aubrey Allison had her best game of the young season collecting 23 digs and connecting on four aces from the service line. Madi Wahl chipped in 12 kills and Abby Suiter controlled the net with 7 blocks (2 solo).
