SSU, Lindsey Wilson contest suspended in 62nd minute due to inclement weather

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- A nonconference contest between the Shawnee State women's soccer program and the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer program was suspended in the 62nd minute of play due to inclement weather in the area. Wednesday's contest will not officially count for or against either team. More information will be coming regarding the contest in the future.

Shawnee State put together a strong first half defensively, as starting goalkeeper Julye Derenemesnil made four saves over the opening 23 minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. Wheelersburg's Annie Coriell also had a shot opportunity in the 20th minute that sailed just left of the goal -- while Lucasville's Lucie Ashkettle put a shot on frame that was saved in the 34th minute of play. Lindsey Wilson posted three additional shots over the half's final 17 minutes, with a Ashiat Naluggwa shot with 30 seconds left being the closest to connecting as the ball hit the post and rolled out of bounds.

With additional depth, Lindsey Wilson was able to capitalize as the Blue Raiders got one goal each from Nataly Chauta, Liza von Blumenthal, Naluggwa and Sharon Nadunga in succession. Ashkettle's 61st minute shot, which went off to the right, proved to be the last shot of the night for either team as the contest was ultimately called due to lightning after a lengthy delay that lasted for approximately 90 minutes prior to the match being called.

The Bears are scheduled to be back in action Saturday evening against No. 3 Tennessee-Southern at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT in what will be a nonconference doubleheader. The men follow that action up with a contest at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.

The next home game for the Shawnee State women's soccer program is Tuesday afternoon at 12 p.m., when the Bears will face Washington Adventist (Md.). The SSU men and Washington Adventist follow at 2:30 p.m. the same day.
