SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team fell 1-0 on the road at Morningside University (Iowa) in their season opener. The V-Hawks start the season 0-1, while the Mustangs rise 1-0.
The Mustangs took the first shot on goal five minutes into the match giving Veerle Vriens her first save of the season. The V-Hawks stayed on the defensive including Vriens second save of the game until Rachel Kinney took the first shot on goal with a save by Kayla Syverson with 19:58 on the clock. Shortly after MU scored their only goal of the match putting the V-Hawks behind. With the pressure on Evelyn Shaw took a shot on goal shortly after giving Syverson another save. Rounding our the first half Vriens had two more saves leading the defensive side of the field.
Shaw took the first shot of the of second half, wide right, followed a few minutes later with a save by Vriens on a header by Emma Feigl. Jenna Bennett would take two corner kicks followed by a shot on goal with 64:04 on the board. Shaw would have the final shot on goal to end the game with only two minutes remaining.
The V-Hawks had seven shot attempts, with Shaw taking 2 on goal. Vriens had seven saves in 90 minutes, while the Mustangs had five.
The V-Hawks return to action Wednesday August 21 with a scrimmage on the road at UW-Eau Claire.
