ONU UNLOADS 14 RUNS TO PICK UP FIRST CCAC WIN OF CAMPAIGN

MISHAWAKA, Ind. –   The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team unloaded 14 runs to pick up their first win of the conference slate Sunday afternoon in a victory over Indiana South Bend this weekend.

The Tigers used a two-out rally in the first inning to set the tone early. Andy Onnen kicked off the rally with a single and was promptly moved over to third after an Aden Aukland double. Evan Pogioli punctuated the spurt with a single to right field to plate both runners and take an early 2-0 lead.

IUSB (7-11, 3-1 CCAC) leveled the score with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but the Tigers would blow the game wide open in their half of the inning. ONU punched in nine runs in the bottom of the third, sending 17 batters to the plate and sending out eight hits to take a commanding lead. Five Tigers recorded an RBI in the frame, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Onnen to make it 11-2 ONU.

The Titans rattled off five unanswered runs to get to within four, but a sacrifice fly from Aukland and a two-RBI double from Vince Martinez put the game out of reach as the Tigers would hold on for the 14-7 victory.

Aukland got in done on the mound, as well, going three innings as the starter while allowing just two earned runs on four hits to collect the win. He passed the ball over to Matthew Cousino, who tacked down the six-inning save and striking out three along the way.

The 14-7 triumph capped a four-game weekend series against IU South Bend, with the Titans taking the first three contests of the set by scores of 12-5, 7-4, and 4-1.

The Tigers will continue play in the CCAC when they take on St. Ambrose this weekend.
