SMC Offense Explodes in Doubleheader Sweep of Morris

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodiist College baseball team ripped the cover off the baseball and swept a doubleheader with a pair of five-inning victories over Morris, 14-1 and 21-1 on a windy Saturday afternoon. 

Game one saw the Pioneers plate 14 runs on nine hits and three SMC pitchers limit the Morris hitters to just one hit in the 14-1 win. Four-different players for SMC hit the ball over the fence at Mooneyham Field for a home run and four players had multiple RBI in the win. 

Matt Smith, Justin Dawkins and Leo Lopez each had two hits in the win. Lopez and Smith had three and two RBI. 

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, SMC plated nine in the second that included home runs by Dario Astudillo and Parker Winfield to go along with a three-RBI triple by Lopez. The Pioneers allowed an unearned run to the Hornets in the top of the third before getting back on the scoreboard with one more in the bottom half of the inning. Then, they scored three more in the fourth for the final margin.

Game two saw the SMC offense score 14 runs on five hits in the bottom of the first to quickly erase a 1-0 deficit. Elijah Franz, Jarian Pinckney and Justin Dawkins each had two hits. For Dawkins, he hit a pair of home runs and Blake Exizian and Chance Greene each had four RBI in the rout. Three SMC pitchers saw action in the win allowing just one hit.

After scoring 14 in the first, SMC plated a run in the second, four in the third and two more in the fourth for the win.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. matchup at Mooneyham Field.
