Lady Buccaneers Fall in Second Game of HBCUAC Crossover
Wilberforce, Ohio, December 15, 2024 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) women's basketball team fell to Voorhees University 74-40 in their second game of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Crossover. The game played at the Gaston Lewis Arena on the campus of Wilberforce University in Ohio was their second game in as many days.
Despite initially opening the game with a 7-5 lead, UVI (0-3, 0-2 HBCUAC) found themselves trailing after a 10-0 run by Voorhees in the first quarter, ending the period with a score of 15-7. The Lady Buccaneers struggled to find their rhythm offensively in the first half as they fell behind however the team only trailed by nine points at half time 28-19.
The second half saw Voorhees extending their lead as UVI continued to face challenges on the court. Despite their efforts to rally back, the Lady Tigers maintained their advantage and secured the victory.
Leading the way for UVI was sophomore guard Ashukamay'ah Phillips with nine points, followed by junior guard Maliah LaCour contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Voorhees' TyShemia Bunkley led all scorers with 17 points.
The UVI women's basketball team will have a day of rest before their upcoming game at The HBCUAC Crossover on December 16. The Lady Buccaneers will be facing Wilberforce University at Gaston Lewis Arena, the host institution for this edition of the Crossover event.
