LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Midway had a tough go in a non-conference triangular, losing to both Boyce and Cincinnati-Clermont in an invitational hosted by Boyce Saturday.
The Eagles fell 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 to the host Bulldogs before suffering a 25-19, 19-25, 8-25, 25-23, 15-11 to Clermont in the day's second match.
BOYCE
For the second time in five days, the Eagles opened with an opening set win over the Bulldogs before proceeding to drop the following three.
Things seemed to turn Boyce's way at the end of the third set. Meghan Adams tied the match for Midway with a kill, but an attack error then gave way to a Megan Wood kill that gave the Bulldogs a two-sets-to-one lead.
The Eagles struggled at the net the entire match, hitting below .100 in each of the final three sets.
Aubry Koester had a team-best 18 kills, while Blair Riney (24) and Emily Slaughter (20) each had at least 20 digs.
CINCINNATI-CLERMONT
After losing the opening set, Midway appeared to have all the momentum in the world by winning the next two, including a 17-point rout in the third.
But attack struggles again loomed large, with the Eagles hitting in the negative in both the fourth and fifth sets.
Despite that, Midway was just two points away from a four-set win, before the Cougars closed on a 5-0 run, aided by four Midway errors.
UCC had an even bigger run to close in the final set, turning an 11-7 deficit into a 15-11 win with an 8-0 run.
Koester again led the team with 21 kills, Riney had 18 more digs and Marinna Liedle had 25 assists in both matches Saturday. Liedle is averaging 26 assists per contest over her last four matches.
Now 10-13 overall, the Eagles have a good chance to get back above .500 in River States Conference play on Tuesday, when they host Alice Lloyd at 7 p.m.
