St. Ambrose drops road contest to Holy Cross

St. Ambrose struggled from the field all afternoon, only shooting just over 25% from two-point range and 21% from beyond the arc in the 78-37 loss at Holy Cross. Six Bees scored from the field for St. Ambrose (6-13 and 4-8 CCAC) in the loss. As a team, SAU only managed to score in double figures in the third period as they scored just nine points in each of the remaining periods.

The Bees opened the game with the first score from Olivia Harter and then a Mary Gruber jumper shortly after to tie the game at four each. The Bees never found their offensive rhythm to find themselves trailing 12-5 with 3:05 on the clock. A jump-shot from Carrieanne Hungate only had SAU down five scores to keep them within striking distance until the Saints took over. From there on, St. Ambrose could not keep pace with Holy Cross.

A short offensive spurt from Payton Calouette and Allie Govert at the 9:41 mark chipped away at the Saints lead, but it was never enough for the Bees. St. Ambrose headed into the break down 32-18.

After the break, Holy Cross picked up right where they left off in the first half as they went on an 11-0 run before the Bees scored. To break the drought for SAU, it was Govert who sank a free throw to trail 19-43. That would be the only score for St. Ambrose for the next minute and a half before Harter netted a triple. Not much else sparked offensively for the Bees the rest of the contest as they dropped a conference match 78-37.

SAU grabbed four more boards than the HCC, 37-33, but threw the ball away 31 times compared to the 15 of the Saints. Holy Cross shot lights out at a mere 56% from the floor.

Gruber and Hungate led the Bees with eight points each. Hungate also recorded six rebounds while Gruber grabbed four boards.

Govert dropped in seven while Harter added five. Harter also collected four steals.

Calouette netted four as Caitlyn Thole and Isabella Hutchinson each scored two points. Erica Bostwick added a free throw. Thole, Hutchinson, and Bostwick each pulled down four boards as well.

Next, the Bees will look to face Calumet in Whiting, Ind this upcoming week. Game time is set for 5 p.m. CST on Saturday at Rittenmeyer Center.
