Women's Lacrosse Pummel Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.- The women's lacrosse won their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game on Saturday. The team used scoring streaks of seven goals and 11 goals to defeat the Montreat College Lady Cavaliers 22-7. 

After Kylie Heinrich scored a free position shot, Montreat scored the next two goals to put TWU down 2-1. This is where the first streak of goals came into play. The team scored four of the seven to end the first quarter. Kate Buchanan scored twice while Kyla Shane and Olivia Downey scored the remaining two, giving the team a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

Buchanan started the scoring in the second and Stephanie Rocha followed to make the score 7-2. The final goal in the seven-goal scoring streak was scored by Buchanan, moving the team's lead to 8-2. Downey scored back-to-back goals to give the team a 10-3 at the halftime break.

Montreat scored the first goal of the second half. Then the Lady Bulldogs hit the 11-goal streak. Heinrich started the scoring streak and was followed by Shane. Heinrich scored again while Downey, Buchanan, and Jozlyn Long ended the scoring in the third quarter, giving the team a 16-4 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Shane kept the scoring going in the fourth quarter and a goal by Downey pushed the team's commanding lead to 18-4. Anika Van Burskirk scored back-to-back goals to push the team to 20 goals and Buchanan scored the 11th goal of the scoring streak, moving the score to 21-4. Shane scored for a fourth time, making the final score 22-7.

Buchanan led with six goals, Downey had five goals, Shane had a career-high four goals and Kylie Heinrich had three goals and four assists. 

TWU (3-8, 1-3 AAC) will play their home finale on Saturday. The team will host Senior Day against Warren Wilson College at 11:00 a.m.
