HOOVER, Ala. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets earned their first win as an NAIA program during their four-game series on Thursday and Friday against the Grace Lancers at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex in Alabama.
The Yellow Jackets (1-6) scored a 9-1 victory during the second game of Thursday's twinbill but the Lancers (3-4) claimed the other three contests to take the series. Grace won the first contest 7-2 on Thursday and swept Friday's action with 8-5 and 17-8 wins.
Defiance posted the first run in the opening contest on Thursday but Grace got to Defiance starter Colin Danek during their second trip through the batting order. The score stood 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth when the Lancers added a two-spot in their half of the fifth and sixth frames.
DC played a stellar game in the nightcap led by Tim Bobek's three-hit game and a 1-run effort on the mound by Josh Gase to claim a 9-1 win. Defiance posted three runs in the third to grab control of the game when the Lancers misplayed a fly ball by Anthony Silvera Jr. with the bases loaded. Bobek capped off the three-run fifth with an RBI double and drove in another run in the sixth with his third hit of the game. Gase held Grace to four hits and his lone run allowed scored on a groundout.
Friday's doubleheader went Grace's way after starting with an 8-5 decision before a 17-8 offensive display. Grace jumped ahead 6-0 in the first game and Defiance's four-run rally in the seventh fell short. In the second contest, the Lancers used an eight-run second inning to gain control of the game after DC plated one run in the first. Bobek highlighted the offense again with a four-RBI effort on two triples. The senior tripled two runs in the second and two more in the fifth inning to finish the weekend with four extra-base hits.
