(RV) Volleyball opens season with a pair of sweeps at Benedictine Triangular

Benedictine Volleyball opened the regular season on Tuesday with a pair of sweeps over Hannibal-LaGrange University and (RV) Bethel (Kan.) College inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.

In the opener over Hannnibal-LaGrange, (RV) Benedictine earned a 3-0 win behind 24 aces and followed up with a 3-0 win over Bethel to close out the Benedictine Triangular.

Benedictine made quick work of the Trojans in the season opener to start the day. They finished the match with a .321 hit percentage with 37 kills to go along with the most aces in a single match since the 2007 season when Benedictine had two games with 18 aces each.

The Ravens finished with a balanced attack with four hitters at 6 or more kills. Maura Lickteig led the Ravens with 9 kills, followed by Regan Bruggeman with 8. Hokulani Sagapolu and Winny Harris finished with 6 kills each. 

Haley Cahill led the Ravens with 16 assists while Amber Allen added 10 as the Ravens finished the match with 34 total assists.

Defensively, Lickteig and Carolina Zapata finished with two block assists each while Harris added a solo block and one block assist. Evelyn Arreola was the only Raven in double figures in digs, finishing with 12.

In the match with Bethel, the Ravens finished with a .250 attack percentage on 45 kills.

Sagapolu finished with a double-double, leading the Ravens with 14 kills and 19 digs. Mahala Sewell gave the Ravens a second double-digit hitter, finishing with 10, Harris added 8 while Bruggeman finished with 7.

Cahill finished with 21 of the Ravens 42 team assists as Allen added 15.

Defensively, Bruggeman led the team with 3 blocks assists followed by Harris and Lickteig with 2 block assists each. Arreola added 9 digs while Nil Konakli added 8.

Benedictine hits the road for a tournament hosted by Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb., on Friday. They play Dickinson State and Bellevue at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
