Morningside goes 2-0 in spring break doubleheader

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Morningside's men's tennis team picked up another program first as they won a 6-1 match over Division I Mercyhurst. They followed up the history-making victory with a 7-0 win over Shawnee State to keep their record unblemished.

Marcos Menendez Hervella and Alexis Diaz pushed the needle in Morningside's direction, getting a 6-2 win at no. 2 doubles. Mark Trenkle and Santiago Minetti followed with a 6-2 win at no. 1 to secure the doubles point.

Trenkle gave the Mustangs the lead again after Mercyhurst picked up its lone win, winning his no. 1 singles match 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Diaz added a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win at no. 3 singles, and Mathys Arnold secured the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at no. 5.

Jesse Gerth added a 6-4, 6-1 win at no. 6, and Minetti wrapped things up with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the no. 4 slot.

The Mustangs made quick work of Shawnee State to wrap up the day's matches, running the table as Arnold and Mikhil Raja won no. 3 doubles 6-0, Minetti and Joao Pedro Pierry Izoldi Costa won no. 2, 6-0, and Trenkle and Abhishek Mohapatra won at no. 1, 6-1.

Gerth was first in the book in singles play, winning a quick 6-0, 6-0 match. Menendez added to Morningside's lead 6-1, 6-3 in the no. 1 slot, and Diaz secured the win 6-0, 6-0, at no. 2.

Raja scored himself a 6-0, 6-0 win in the no. 6 slot, Mohapatra won 6-0, 6-0 at no. 5, and Costa concluded the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win for the Mustangs.

Morningside has one more match while in South Carolina before heading home and traveling to Behel in Newton, Kan., next week.
