Ilea scores victory at No. 1 singles against IU-Southeast to lead SSU women's tennis over course of week

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The women's tennis program got a big effort from Antonia Ilea at No. 1 singles Saturday as Ilea was able to outlast Indiana-Southeast's Maci Vaughn by a 6-1, 7-5 margin, which led the women's tennis program at Shawnee State's efforts in its matches overall against Midway (Ky.) and Indiana-Southeast over the course of the week.

Indiana-Southeast

Playing an individual who held a 4-5 overall record against a formidable schedule that included nationally ranked powerhouses College of Coastal Georgia and Marian (Ind.) among others, Ilea got the better of Vaughn as the senior's play in the first contest and poise in the second affair resulted in two strong wins for Ilea, who claimed her third singles victory of the season and moved to 2-2 against River States Conference competition with the triumph.

Ilea, along with fellow No. 1 doubles partner McKenzie Harman, also fared well at that spot, as the duo dropped a scant 6-4 decision to Indiana-Southeast's No. 1 doubles paring of Ivy Hasenour and Anellah Trujillo in the match.

In additional singles competition, Miranda Johnson and Makenna Pelphrey each won two games in both sets that they played while showing progression in each, dropping 6-2, 6-2 decisions to Trujillo at No. 3 singles and Indiana-Southeast's Sydney Adams at No. 6 singles.

Midway (Ky.)

Against Midway, Antonia Ilea took two games in the first set from Midway's Mara Guillen at No. 2 singles, while the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tandems of Brooklyn Foose and Miranda Johnson and Maggie Clark and Makenna Pelphrey also won two games apiece.

Additional
