
Women's Volleyball Can't Hold Two Set Lead; Falls to Grand View in Five
The Culver-Stockton College women's volleyball team let an opportunity for victory slip away Friday night at Charles Field House.
The Wildcats claimed the first two sets against visiting Grand View University before the Vikings rallied in the final three sets to post an 18-25, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-10 victory over the Wildcats.
C-SC opened the match with a strong attack, hitting at a .290 hitting percentage, to easily take the set. The Wildcats registered 13 kills to the Vikings' nine kills in the set.
In the second set, the Wildcats used a strong blocking game which led to eight hitting errors for the Vikings. C-SC totaled 10 team blocks in the match, a far cry from the first meeting between the schools when C-SC did not record a block in the three set loss.
Grand View found its footing in the third set before the Wildcats re-grouped in the fourth stand held a late lead. The Wildcats were just three points from victory at 22-19 after a service ace from Victoria Pollard.
However, the Vikings scrambled and won five straight points to take a 24-22 lead. C-SC battled back to tie the game at 24, but the Vikings won the final two points to forced a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, C-SC rcould never get any momentum in the set. After tying the set at 1-1, Grandview reeled off three straight points to take a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats tied the game at 4-4 before the Vikings scored six of the next points to take a 10-6 lead.
C-SC closed to within 10-8 but the Wildcats would not any closer as the Vikings won four straight points to get to the brink of victory.
The Wildcats held off two match points to get within 14-10, but the Vikings eventually notched the inning point to seal the comeback.
The Wildcats put three players in double figures in kills with Pollard leading the way with 12 terminations. Pollard did not commit an attack error for a .400 hitting percentage. Ashleigh Brawley and Zoe Irvin added 11 kills each.
Defensively, Kyla Ellis recorded a season-high 35 digs in the match while Pollard completed her double double with 12 digs. Brawley had eight blocks in the match with four solo blocks and four block assists. Addie Force contributed five block assists.
The Wildcats will have to quickly forget Friday's result as they host William Penn University in a Heart match Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
