
Warriors Open Fall Slate at ITA Regionals
SALINA, Kan. – Midland University's men's and women's tennis teams opened up the fall portion of their schedule over the weekend, competing in the ITA Central-West Regional Championships. The singles and doubles tournaments were held in Salina, Kansas beginning on Friday.
WOMEN
In singles action, Elaina Fanton dropped her first match of the weekend as she fell in three sets to Kailee Bailey of Morningside (3-6, 7-6, 10-7). In the consolation bracket, she would pick up a win over Zara Littlejohn of William Woods (8-4) and earn a bye before play was suspended before the Consolation Round of 16.
Graziela Dallagnol picked up a win in her first match of the year, defeating Josline Carter of Hastings (6-3, 7-6). In the second round, she fell to Tracy Llamas of the University of Saint Mary (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles play, Fanton teamed up with Kissmel Cedano Lapaix. They won convincingly in their first match, defeating Kyla Metro and Karee Adam of Bethany (8-2). In the second round, the Warriors' duo picked up another win over Nancy Henderson and Madeline Henderson of Oklahoma Wesleyan (8-4). Their tournament came to an end in the quarterfinals however as they fell to the top-seed duo of Daniela Herrera and Daniela Casique of Bethel (8-3) who would go on to win the doubles title.
MEN
The Warriors had a pair of athletes in the main singles draw in Benjamin Starman and Joren Stevens. Starman earned a straight-set win over Diego Infante of Doane (6-0, 6-0) before falling to Daniel Marcano of McPherson in the second round (6-1, 6-4). Stevens also picked up a win in the first round, defeating Carlos Grimaldi of Saint Mary (6-1, 7-5). He fell in the second round to Duarte Melo of William Woods though (6-4, 6-4).
In doubles action, Starman and Stevens paired up and had a spectacular run. They won their opener over Beau Burget and Brady Darr of Avila (8-1) and then defeated Marcus Nardy and Simon Delgadillo of McPherson. In the quarterfinals, Starman and Stevens pushed their way past Luke Craft and Adam Hanson of Kansas Wesleyan (8-3). Then in the semifinals, they punched their way to the championship with a win over Evan Maritz and Nils Dueppe of Saint Mary (8-3). Vying for the regional title, the Midland pair won the first set but ultimately fell in three sets to Zinovii Nahirniak and Noah Burton of William Woods (6-7, 6-3, 10-5).
