WOMEN’S SOCCER PICKS UP DOMINATING 4-0 WIN AT STERLING
STERLING, Kan. – Continuing their spectacular play in September, the Avila women's soccer program recorded a 4-0 victory at Sterling this afternoon in central Kansas to extend their unbeaten streak to eight games.
For the second-straight game, Avila had an early scoring opportunity from the penalty spot in the 19th minute.
Mia Yerian stepped up for the one-on-one situation against Sterling's Elysa Apen. Just like Addison Yinger on Wednesday, Yerian buried it in the back of the net to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Avila did not wait long to extend their lead. Just over seven minutes following Yerian's penalty kick, Cali Lasater continued her phenomenal freshman campaign as she joined Annika Holtorf to find Danielle Desmarteau for the sophomore's first goal of the season.
With 10 minutes remaining before halftime, Nikkole Wood scored her first of the season to give Avila a 3-0 lead heading into the break. It was the second-straight game where Wood picked up a point, following her assist versus Saint Mary on Wednesday.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Avila could have grown its lead even more, with Yerian and Samatha Lasater hitting the woodwork on shot attempts and Cali Lasater and Joselyn Clark putting up shots that were stopped by the Warriors' Dixie Morgan.
As time was winding down, the Eagles had one last opportunity to pick up another goal. Alexis Lausch got in on the action with her first of the season.
Becoming the norm this season was another dominating shutout performance from goalkeeper Kenan Ebel. The senior stopped every shot she faced on the afternoon as she picked up her third shutout of the young season. In nine games played, Ebel has a 1.33 GAA.
Cali Lasater assisted on two of Avila's four goals on the afternoon for the first multi-point game of her collegiate career.
The Eagles recorded an astonishing 33 total shots in the match, far and away their highest total of the season.
Avila improved to 6-1-2 (3-0-1 KCAC) on the season. Avila's six victories this season already match last season's win total with nine matches remaining.
