Saint Francis Drops Doubleheader to No. 11 Southeastern
LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) baseball team concluded their trip to the Sunshine State with a doubleheader against No. 11 Southeastern University on Saturday, February 8.
The Cougars fell in game one against the undefeated Fire by a final score of 11-1 before dropping the second game of the day 20-9.
#11 SOUTHEASTERN 11, SAINT FRANCIS 1 (7 INNINGS)
- The Cougars held the Fire scoreless through the first innings of game one, but Southeastern managed to put four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to take the lead.
- The Fire scored again in the fifth and sixth innings for the 11-0 lead.
- A fly ball to center field brought in Kasen Oribello in the top of the seventh for the Cougars, but Southeastern managed to hold on for the win.
- Jayden Lepper and Callan Stauffer each had a hit on Saturday.
- Gage Smith took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings, striking out three batters and allowing nine hits.
#11 SOUTHEASTERN 20, SAINT FRANCIS 9 (7 INNINGS)
- USF plated two runs in the top of the first inning after scoring twice on bases-loaded walks.
- The Fire brought in six runs in the bottom of the second and third quarter for the 6-2 lead.
- Southeastern would score again in the fourth to make the score 9-2.
- The Cougars answered, with six runs in the fifth inning. A two-run homer from Oribello, a double to right field from Xavier Nolan and an RBI single from Brenden Lytle highlighted the inning for Saint Francis.
- The host team answered with a trio of home runs in the final innings as the Fire secured the 20-8 win.
- The Cougars had nine hits in game two. Lepper went 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Oribello and Nolan had extra-base hits and combined for four RBI.
- Luke Siren got the start on the mound. Siren threw 2.1 innings, striking out two batters while allowing four hits.
Up next, USF baseball (1-3) will travel to Montgomery, Alamba for doubleheaders against Bethel University (Tenn.) and Faulker University on February 15-16.
