
No. 22 Women's Soccer Earns Shutout Win Over No. 19 MidAmerica Nazarene
Olathe, Kan., (Oct. 2, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Olathe, Kan., for a Wednesday afternoon heart of America Athletic Conference Nationally ranked doubleheader against MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.). The No. 22 women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over No. 19 MNU.
The women's game started with MidAmerica Nazarene creating the better of chances early on. Sophomore Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance (Cornella Llobregat, Spain) made three saves through the opening nine minutes of play. The first shot on target for the Vikings came from Junior Forward Marlene Flores (Bolivia) near the 10-minute march, which was saved by the Pioneer keeper. The two teams traded possession through the next stretch of play, until just past the midway point of the half. Junior Midfielder Judit Ferre (Barcelona, Spain) gained possession in the midfield, and sent a long-range shot over the MNU keeper and into goal to put the Vikings on top, 1-0, with less than 20-minutes to play in the half. Both teams struggled to create quality chances through the late minutes of the half, and MVC went into the break with the one goal advantage.
Play in the second half started with another two early chances created by MidAmerica Nazarene, through the 55-minute mark, both saved by Barbara Bujalance. Four minutes later, Senior Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) put two shots on goal, with both attempts saved. Both teams tried to find another goal midway through the half, as Barbara Bujalance made one save, and both Junior Forward Silvia Maldonado (Madrid, Spain) and Senior Forward Miriam Aldabo Alguero (Mequinenza, Spain) had shots saved. The Pioneers tried to add a late equalizer, putting a shot on goal with less than seven minutes to play, but Barbara Bujalance made one more save to preserve the shutout and give the Vikings a 1-0 victory.
Ferre scored her fifth goal of the season, and now has 16 total points. Barbara Bujalance made seven saves in goal and secured the fifth shutout of the season for the team. The Vikings held an 11-10 edge in total shots, and earned two corner kicks.
Missouri Valley improves to 7-3-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Heart. MidAmerica Nazarene drops to 8-2-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Up next, the Viking soccer teams travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa, to play a Heart doubleheader against William Penn (Iowa). The women's game starts at 11 a.m., followed by a game against the No. 6 Statesmen at 1:30 p.m., in the Heart Game of the Week.
