BELLEVUE, Neb. – Bellevue University placed five players in double figures en route to an 88-47 non-conference basketball victory over College of Saint Mary on Monday at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
The Flames (1-9) trailed 19-12 with :33 left in the first quarter after Maura Tichota's layup. However, the Bruins (7-3) went on a 16-3 run over the next 3:46 to stretch their lead to 20. Bellevue led 52-21 at the half.
CSM reduced its turnovers to 14, but rebounding again was an uphill battle, as Bellevue had a 51-35 edge in that category. The Bruins also made 12 of 28 (42.9%) from 3-point range.
"Overall, we just didn't guard the 3-point line well enough,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Going into the next game, we're going to talk a lot about our focus and how we can handle when teams go on runs, specifically the second quarters when we break down a lot.''
Haley Debuse led College of Saint Mary with 10 points and six rebounds, while Madelyn Gaughen added 10 points and boards. Ella Klusman made two of the Flames' three 3-pointers and finished with seven points.
Miller credited Gaughen for her defense on Bellevue's Ashtyn Arnold. She also praised Freda Moore for her persistence in attacking the basket on offense.
The Flames jump back into Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game in Sioux City against Briar Cliff University.
