Women's Basketball Get Past Pikeville in Overtime

PIKEVILLE, Ky.- The women's basketball team played an exciting overtime game on Saturday. Tennessee Wesleyan came out on top in overtime, defeating the University of Pikeville Lady Bears 59-54 on the road.

The Lady Bulldogs got off to a strong start in the first quarter, fueled by sharp shooting from Courtney Farr, who opened the scoring with a jump shot assisted by Jacelyn Stone. Jaci Powell made two three-pointers in the quarter, helping the team go into the second quarter with a 14-12 lead. 

The second quarter started with Stone scoring the first seven points for TWU, moving the score to 21-15. Pikeville responded with a surge, but the Lady Bulldogs' were able to stay in range of the deficit. Jalaya Lindsey and Anna Crowder both scored to help tie the game at 25-25 before a three-pointer by Pikeville helped the opponets lead 28-25 at halftime. 

Out of the halftime break, Tennessee Wesleyan scored nine straight points. Powell and Stone combined during the scoring run to give the team a 34-28 lead. The lead did not last though as the opponents scored 14 of the next 19 points to lead 42-39 at the end of the third quarter. 

Halfway through the fourth quarter, Lindsey's layup put the score at 46-45. Tennessee Wesleyan continue to clamp down on defense to help stay within striking distance. Crowder put the game in a 51-51 tie with a layup, a shot which forced the game to go into overtime.

After falling behind in overtime, clutch shooting helped the team score eight straight points on their way to the five-point victory. Crowder made a pair of free throws to give the team a 55-54 lead while layups by Farr and Lindsey sealed the teams 59-54 win. 

Stone led the team with 18 points while Crowder was in double figures with 13 points and Powell added 12 points.

The schedule brings the Lady Bulldogs (8-7, 6-5 AAC) back to Athens for their next game on Monday. The team will host conference opponent Columbia International University at 5:30 p.m.
